Do you find yourself worrying a lot?
I know it’s easy to do in the modern, plugged-in world we live in where we get to witness all of the horrible in the world as it happens as well as all the seemingly amazing things everyone else is doing – as they happen.
There is so much to worry about. From the global to the local to the totally inane.
It’s way too easy to come up with shit to worry about. #amiright?
For example, here are 10 I thought of in like, a minute:
- North Korea
- Global Warming
- The killing of our oceans (that giant plastic gyre in the Pacific)
- Natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, floods, etc.)
- Not having any retirement savings
- Am I like my mother? (Meaning, will I get dementia like she did?)
- What am I supposed to be doing with my life?
- How will I pay for my kids’ college?
- Am I really a good writer or are people just polite?
See? Easy….and I could keep going. There is so much to worry about!
So I’ve decided to do something RADICAL!
I’m going to stop worrying.
I’m just letting that shit go.
It’s really not as hard as it sounds. I’ve been working on it for a while and it trust me, it gets easier.
Meditation helps, that’s for sure, but so does something called “thought stoppage.”
This is something I learned through athletics where your thoughts can seriously affect your performance. If you start spinning in a world of negative thoughts and fears (and worries!) then just stop.
Whatever you have to do, do it – say something to yourself, like a mantra. Or just consciously stop thinking the worrisome thoughts and think about something else.
It’s a very difficult easy thing to do.
And it gets easier with practice, I know because I have been practicing for the past year or so. I’m no Ninja master, but I am getting pretty good at it.
[wait. am i just in denial?] <<< oh well, not gonna worry about it.
Here’s the thing…if I worry one of two things will happen:
- The horrible thing will happen. Worrying about it won’t stop it from happening.
- The horrible thing won’t happen. Then all the worrying was for nothing.
Besides, most of the things we worry about can’t really be addressed until they happen.
So worrying in advance just makes us miserable when we could be present in the last joyful moment before the rug gets pulled out from under us, or the test comes back positive, or we discover our car did get broken into.
Does that make sense?
