On Quitting or What Giving Up Taught Me

th-5

We are often told  Never give up! Keep Trying! but I don’t think that’s the best advice.

I have learned a lot by “giving up” or “quitting.” In fact, I do it all the time.

I did it last week.

Yup, that’s right. One day last week I was having a very bad horrible no good day. And I said to myself, “Screw this. I’m going to quit.”

I’m going to quit this job.

I’m going to quit my long commute.

I am going to quit making excuses.

I am taking a big dose of #fuckitol

Now that I have quit I am ready to lay on the couch and eat bon bons all day. #right?!?

stuffing-your-face

Not quite. Before I marched to the office to turn in my keys and hastily scribbled resignation letter I did this one thing:

I allowed myself to dream about what I would do, now that I quit. Gave up. Now that I didn’t have a job I had to drive an hour to. Now that I had the whole day free to do whatever I wanted to do. No obligations, no commitments, no one to answer to.

I got still. I listened to my heart and my soul.

This is what they said to me (being my heart and my soul they were kind enough to take turns and not talk over each other, though they were very excited and had a lot to say):

Oh Sweet Jessica,

First we want to say congratulations on quitting (again!) You are so brave and we love that you are willing to do what is best for us, even when other people may not understand. It is a very courageous thing to do these days, when most people settle for less out of fear. We are honored you think so highly of us that you are willing to take such big risks on our behalf.

We are 100% behind you, because we know how awesome and powerful you are and what a gifted manifest-er you are. We have seen your manifestation magic at work before (the sweetie, the house, the trip to Europe, the job you just gave up on for something else) and we are confident you will manifest more awesomeness now!

What we would love – what would nourish us the most – is you fully dedicating yourself to living your life the way that works best for you (and us, of course.) We wonder what that will look like and are excited to see.

Do you mind if we make a couple of suggestions?

Heart wants you to spend really good time with your kids and friends and sweetie. Heart wants you to write and spend time with horses.

Soul wants you to not feel guilty about quitting. Soul wants you to bet it all on yourself because Soul knows you will succeed beyond your wildest dreams. Soul wants you to meditate and share what you have learned with others – so you learn to value your knowledge too. Soul wants you to get outside and frolic as much as possible.

We both want you to not worry so much about the money or the health insurance. You will be fine. There are a lot of people out there you can talk to about how they manage. We know you are smart and have the resources to help yourself feel comfortable, secure, and healthy.

We know you are going to be fine. Better than fine, in fact. YOU WILL THRIVE and so will we.

We love you and appreciate you taking such good care of us,

Your Heart and Soul

Full Disclosure: I didn’t quit my job.

Yet.

But I did get clear on what it is my heart and soul are asking for.

And that gives me strength and clarity and power.

Because now that I am clear on what I want I can work on making it happen. I am not sure when it will happen, but I am sure it will.

I’m betting on it.
